Mobility & Safety Warning
The cave is pitch black. Inside, you will walk on slippery wooden boardwalks and damp dirt. Reaching the upper coffin chambers requires climbing steep, narrow wooden stairs/ladders. If you have severe joint issues or limited mobility, you may want to skip the upper chambers.

How to Get from Pai to Tham Lod
Tham Lod is located 50 km north of Pai along Route 1095. There is no scheduled public bus service directly to the cave entrance. Travelers generally visit using one of three options:
- Self-Drive Scooter: Only recommended if you are an experienced rider. The road crosses the high Kiew Lom Pass with steep switchbacks and fast-moving traffic.
- Shared Group Tour: An afternoon van excursion leaving Pai around 12:30 PM, stopping at viewpoints and Lod Cave, ending with sunset at Pai Canyon.
- Private Driver: The safest, most flexible option. A private sedan or SUV picks you up at your hotel and lets you set the pace, easily coordinating with Ban Ja Bo.
What to Expect Inside: Lanterns & Rafts
The Gas Lantern Guide: The caverns have no permanent electric lights to protect the delicate ecosystem and bat colonies. You will follow a local guide carrying a pressurized kerosene gas lantern. The hiss of the lantern and the warm glow on the giant limestone stalactites create an incredible, primeval atmosphere.
Traditional Bamboo Rafts: The Nam Lang River flows straight through the cave. To move between the main chambers, you will board a low bamboo raft steered by local raft pilots pushing against the riverbed with long poles. Hundreds of large fish swim alongside the rafts.
Children Suitability
Kids generally find the cave fascinating, but you must monitor them closely. The river is deep in parts, there are no safety railings on the boardwalks, and climbing the wet ladders requires steady footing. We recommend it for children aged 6 and older.
Rainy Season Water Levels
During the heavy rainy season (usually July to October), the Nam Lang River can flood, raising water levels inside the cave. For safety reasons, rafting is suspended when water is high, and visits may be limited to the first chamber only. Always message our local desk to check daily cave statuses.
Supporting the Shan Community
Unlike standard commercial caves, Tham Lod is managed directly by the local Shan village community. The guide fees and bamboo raft ticket rates are paid directly to local families, providing sustainable income to the people who have coexisted with the cave for generations.
