Should I do the loop clockwise or counter-clockwise?
Both directions are beautiful. Clockwise (starting from Chiang Mai to Mae Sariang) has a gentler initial ascent, letting you get used to the curves. Counter-clockwise (Chiang Mai to Pai first) hits the steepest, most technical curves early on.
Is it safe to rent a scooter for the Mae Hong Son Loop?
We do not recommend renting standard automatic scooters for the entire loop. The steep downhill segments can overheat automatic brakes. A semi-automatic (like a Honda Wave) or manual motorcycle is much safer due to engine braking, and only if you have proven riding experience.
